Before you buy anything online, it’s worth doing a price comparison to check you’re getting the best deal. But did you know you can look back at historical pricing if you’re an Amazon shopper?
From the face of it, it doesn’t seem like it would be much use checking what prices used to be on Amazon, but in fact it’s a powerful tool. By looking back, you can check whether today’s price is the best time to buy – or whether you’ve just missed a deal.
The website for this is called CamelCamelCamel (weird name… I know). Although the website might look old, it’s quite simple to use.
How does it work?
To check historical pricing on an item, simply type in the name of the product or paste the URL from Amazon into the search bar. It will then show you historical pricing data, with most having 1 year (or more) in pricing, so you’re able to look back at the pricing trends.
The key use for this tool is to look at where the pricing graph is now. Where does it stack up against historical pricing? Should you purchase now, or does it look like a sale is coming? Here’s a few example price graphs, so you know what to be looking for:
Morphy Richards 4 slice toaster
Below is a price graph for the past 18 months for a Morhpy Richards toaster on Amazon. As you can see throughout the year, it has bounced around in price between its RRP of £49.99 and the lowest price of £34.99. Those drops on the graph indicate price reductions, and there have been multiple drops and price increases over the year.
The price it’s showing right now is the cheapest it has been in all this time (£29.99) and would mean it is the right time to buy. It may well drop in price again throughout the year, but you can see that’s the lowest price it’s been – which means you can’t go wrong.
You can also tell from the graph, that price drops don’t last very long (one or two weeks at a time), so if you wanted it for a cheap price, you’d have to go quick.
Echo Dot 3rd Gen with clock and Alexa
On the other hand, here is a price graph for the Echo Dot 3rd Gen with clock. Its RRP is £59.99, which is the price it is now – but you can see it has dropped in price 3 times in the past few months and has spent weeks at the lowest price of £34.99.
You can see you’ve just missed a price drop by a few weeks, but the trends in the graph suggest that it may drop in price again.
You can probably guess that now is not the best time to buy, so hanging back and checking in a week or so, might mean that you save around £25 on your purchase.
What to do if you’ve just missed a price drop
If the graph of the items you’re looking to buy looks similar to the Echo Dot, and you’ve just missed a price drop, there is something you can do. On the same page, you will be able to set a price alert, where they will email you when the product drops below a certain price.
You can set whichever price you want before they email you too, which means if you’re not in desperate need of something, you can track it down to a price that you would buy it at. There is a lot more data to look at, but this is what it’s most useful for.
So there we have it – CamelCamelCamel is a clever tool that will steer you in the right direction of whether it’s a good deal. Hopefully it makes you an expert bargain hunter!
