It’s something there have always been stories about… but just how easy is it to trade a penny into a house? It’s time to test it out.
I do love setting myself challenges – whatever they are. It’s something that keeps life fresh and exciting.
This one however might be my biggest challenge yet.
You may have seen in the past me getting £600 worth of shopping for 4p… or finding it cheaper to get from Sheffield to Essex by travelling 1,000 miles more – via Berlin.
But this time, I’m going to try and trade my way from a single penny – up to as high value as I can… which could be a house, diamond… the possibilities are endless!
Myself and fellow blogger Mrs Mummypenny will be taking on this challenge (in a little friendly (or not so friendly) competition…
Where’s The Inspiration Come From?
You may have seen videos, articles or even TV shows of people trading from a paperclip to something huge, like a house or a car.
Just recently, both Mrs Mummypenny and I read an article about a girl who traded from a hairclip to her own house in a matter of months.
Lynn sent it to me on Facebook, and after a bit of discussion, it sounded like something we both wanted to try.
The fact that there was no cash involved at all made it tricky – but it’s something that has seemingly been done by multiple people in the past.
Being money bloggers, and it’s something that neither Lynn nor I have ever done before, it makes the perfect premise for a challenge, to see if it’s possible for the average Joe.
So over the next few months, we’re going to be slowly but surely trading our way up from a single penny to the highest value item we can… and blogging/posting about our progress.

What Are The Rules?
To do this challenge together, we needed to set some ground rules (as we’re going to compete to see who does better).
So below is the list of rules that we’re going to stick to throughout this challenge:
- We start from a single penny coin on Tuesday 1st June
- No money is involved in any trading (i.e: No selling of items) – apart from the penny at the start
- No close family or friends can trade with us
Could this fall flat on its face? Yes.
Could good things come from it? 100%!
We’re interested to see just how easy it is to initiate trades, how much it could lead to, and have fun in the process.
I must admit, I don’t know what to make of my competition. Lynn could do extremely well… but I’m a competitive soul, so hopefully I’ll always be one step ahead!
How Do I Follow Your Progress?
Both Lynn and I will be posting our trades on social media from starting with the penny, to whatever we can get our hands on.
We’ll also be updating our blogs (this one here or on Mrs Mummypenny here) – so you can see what has been traded and when.
And as a little extra, we’ve set up a Facebook group, so you can track our progress – and also try your own trades too! We couldn’t find any group for this in the UK, so you can join in as well.
Conclusion
We’re both looking forward to seeing how this goes – and excited to get started. I hope I win too – wish me luck!
