Spring cleaning is always a challenge whether you love it or hate it… but it’s something we all have to do. Here’s how you can do an eco spring clean on a budget.
It doesn’t have to be Spring to do some Spring Cleaning around the house – for me it feels like I need to keep going over the same spots several times a week!
The place I tend to do my supermarket shopping is Lidl, so a lot of my cleaning products comes from there – and I’ve found them pretty good!
But my friends at SaveMoneyCutCarbon have sent over some Spring Cleaning items for me to try, that each have a eco friendly aspect to them.
I tried them all this month, and can tell you whether each one works as well as my normal brand, and compare prices:
Ocean Saver Antibacterial Spray
This is quite a clever idea. Instead of buying a new cleaning spray each time you run out, you can buy this concentrated solution, which you dissolve in regular water to make your own cleaning spray.
The spray itself actually works quite well too. It doesn’t have a chemical smell to it like some other sprays do, and is effective at getting rid of dirt and stains.
You can buy the refill solution for £1.50, saving the cost of buying a new spray all together – which is quite a good option.
Eco Egg Bamboo Towels
Kitchen rolls can be quite expensive, so this is quite a clever alternative. The bamboo towels here are reusable after a trip to the washing machine.
The towels cost £7.05 for a roll of 20, but all of them are washable and reusable. If you think that a double pack of kitchen roll costs around £3.50 each – you’ll be breaking even pretty quickly.

Eco Coconut Scourer/Galvanised Steel Scourers
I can’t say I’ve ever given this much thought to a scourer before. There are two here, one is made from coconut husk, and one from steel and therefore both biodegradable.
I can’t tell much difference between the two scourers and a standard metal scourer, which is obviously a good thing.
The price for a pack of two coconut scourers is £3.55 – which is quite a bit more than a typical 4 pack of metal scourers for around £1.70. One to consider, but scourers aren’t something you change all that often.
Eco Coconut Bottle Brush
Another one that is made from coconut husk – but this time in the form of a bottle brush.
If you go to the gym, make protein shakes or have a babies bottle, then a bottle brush is a good thing to use.
Normal brush bottle in the supermarket cost around the £2 mark, whereas you can get two eco brushes for £4.45. I can’t tell much difference between the two.
Rainbow Compostable Sponge Cloth
In our house, microfibre cloths and sponges are used everywhere! As an alternative, these compostable sponge cloths were used instead.
Quite honestly, these didn’t really wow us. Being a sponge, it was obviously easier to absorb spills and use for clean up – but its bulky and rigid form wasn’t the same as what we were used to.
Using them as a sponge for washing up in the sink might be a good idea, as these are also reusable and washable – but it may take some getting used to.
These cost £4 for a pack of four – a big jump from normal sponges. I wouldn’t make the swap personally.
What Did I Learn? Eco Spring Cleaning On A Budget
There are a lot of different products now hitting the market that you’re able to switch to if you’re looking to help the environment with your buying.
If you’re doing some spring cleaning on a budget – you can be Eco friendly while doing it at the same time.
In my personal life, I’m less focused on the environmental factor, and more on the cost, as well as practicality.
Since testing these products, I have found multiple different items that do save you money, despite the stigma of going green costing you more.
Of course, there have also been exceptions to the rule – where it wasn’t worth the switch, but it’s all a learning curve.
